Professor Peter Scanlon, the founding father of digital diabetic retinopathy screening, talks to us about his unconventional career pathway, his early fascination with medical ophthalmology, running his own contact lens practice out of his basement in Cheltenham and how caring for young diabetics blinded by their undetected retinopathy was the spur that lead him to set up digital diabetic retinopathy screening. He also shares his thoughts on how he has dealt with NHS bureaucracy, the challenges of working in different healthcare systems and his recipe for a happy and fulfilling career.
