John and Dermot explain why an ophthalmologist and an optometrist decided to make a podcast together.
John Ferris
In my “day-job” I am an ophthalmologist with an interest in cataract surgery, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. However, the other strands running through my career are, doctor / patient education and surgical training, be it as an author of ophthalmology textbooks, producing websites such as SquintClinic.com and Cataractsurgeryinfo.com, or developing online resources and surgical courses to help improve the safety of surgical training.
I was the Head of the School of Ophthalmology in the South West of England for 10 years and a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Training Committee during that period.
I am Trustee of Orbis UK and a member of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Volunteer Faculty.
During my career I have been fortunate to have worked closely with fantastic optometrists, including Dermot, who have taught me a great deal. Eyes On Tomorrow is the perfect way to showcase how ophthalmologists and optometrists can work together harmoniously and productively, whilst having some fun along the way!
Dermot Keogh
I am a Specialist Optometrist with over 25 years of experience. Presently I am the Managing Director and lead Optometrist of Keith Holland Opticians in Cheltenham, an award winning practice.
After graduating from Manchester University, I have since gained additional qualifications in both glaucoma and most recently therapeutic prescribing.
Whilst working in the glaucoma clinic at the Gloucestershire Eye Hospital Trust I met my Podcast co-host John Ferris, a fantastic surgeon, colleague and friend.
The skills, knowledge and specialist qualifications that the current Optometrist can hold has enabled them to treat and manage many eye conditions, which in turn has brought the professions of Optometry and ophthalmology so much closer together. This podcast will most certainly embrace this cooperative approach.
